QUINCY, IL -- The frontrunner in the Republican race for Illinois governor skipped a debate Thursday night with the five other GOP candidates.

Instead, Andy McKenna campaigned in Central Illinois, including a stop in Quincy .

KHQA's Rajah Maples spoke with him earlier Thursday evening.

McKenna says Illinois residents need leadership to get the state back in line fiscally and says he knows how to do just that.

McKenna said, "I'm real clear. We're going to cut spending. We're not going to raise taxes. Be responsible, and that's how we can build a better economy in Illinois."

McKenna is a former chairman for the Illinois Republican Party.

A new poll this week shows him in the lead, with 20 percent of voters in favor of him.
